Guiding the Path of Excellence

The RKD Karate organisation is guided by a highly dedicated and skilled team of black belts, led by esteemed Sensei Mitch Bayliss, who has devoted his life to the study and practice of martial arts. With years of experience and a deep understanding of the art, Sensei Bayliss provides the guidance and leadership necessary for the continued growth and success of RKD Karate.

The Executive Team of RKD Karate is comprised of highly skilled and dedicated martial arts professionals who bring a diverse range of experiences and perspectives to the table. Each member is dedicated to promoting the values of RKD Karate and helping students reach their full potential through expert instruction, innovative programs, and leadership and support.

The organization is structured with a clear hierarchy, consisting of four levels: Renkei Honbu, Divisional or Regional Honbu, Shiku Dojo, and Chiku Dojo.

  • Renkei Honbu: The central governing body of the organisation, responsible for overseeing the administration of all dojos and aligning them with the organisation's goals, philosophy, and standards. The Renkei Honbu is not a physical location, but rather a distributed team lead by the Kaicho (Chief Instructor of Ryu Ku Do Karate) and consisting of the executive team and divisional and regional managers, supported by key advisors, senior blackbelts, and associated administrative and support staff connected online.  While there is no formal the physical location for the Renkei Honbu, it is usually considered the actual location is wherever the Kancho is currently based or training.  In this respect the Renkei Honbu is similar to a modern-day version of the Bakufu (幕府), a Japanese term that means the "tent government" or "tent administration" of a Shogun of feudal Japan.

  • Buchō Honbu: A regional or divisional headquarters, overseeing a group of branch clubs (Shiku Dojos) and district clubs (Chiku Dojos). The Bucho Honbu provides guidance and support to the various dojos within its jurisdiction.

  • Shiku Dojo: A branch club within RKD Karate that has oversight over multiple local district dojos. The Shiku Dojo plays a crucial role in promoting the style, training and development of instructors and students, organising events and competitions, and maintaining the quality and integrity of the art.

  • Chiku Dojo: A branch club or local district dojo under the supervision of a Shiku Dojo. The Chiku Dojo provides instruction and training to students and supports the growth and development of the art within its local community.

In addition to the hierarchical structure, RKD Karate is also divided into two geographic-based levels: Shu (Divisions) and Ku (Regions). The Shu is comprised of multiple Ku and is managed by a Divisional Manager (Shu-dai) who sets the overall vision and direction of the organization within the Shu, coordinating with the Renkei Honbu to ensure consistent implementation of the organization's goals and values. The Ku is comprised of multiple Shiku and associated Chiku and is managed by a Regional Manager (Ku-gashira) who oversees the management and development of multiple branches within a given Ku, ensuring consistency and quality, and providing support to the Dojo Cho (Club Heads).

Each of these levels is managed by dedicated leaders who work together to provide support and guidance to the various dojos, ensuring consistency and quality across the organisation. Whether through expert instruction, innovative programs, or leadership and support, the RKD Karate team works tirelessly to provide students with the best possible experience and advance the art of karate in new and exciting ways.

RKD Karate Executive Team

Mitch Bayliss

Rokudan, Kyoshi, Ryu Ku Do Karate

With over 45 years in martial arts, my journey began as a young student seeking strength and meaning, and evolved into a lifelong pursuit of adaptability, resilience, and human potential. From my roots in Zen Do Kai to developing Fluid Adaption and founding RKD Karate, I’ve explored how martial arts can serve as a path to personal transformation and community connection.

As Kaicho of Ryu Ku Do Karate Hombu, my role is to guide the vision of RKD Karate and support our instructors and students in walking the way of Ryu Ku Do - the Way of Flow and Emptiness. I remain deeply committed to the idea that karate is for all, and that through practice, we can foster strength, unity, and awakening across every generation and ability.

Karl Jenkins

Rokudanho, Shihan, Ryu Ku Do Karate

I began my martial arts journey in 1982 with Judo before moving into Zen Do Kai in 1984, where cross-training taught me to value adaptability, resilience, and practical application. Over time, martial arts became more than a personal discipline, it became a tool for growth, particularly for people with diverse abilities, often exceeding the benefits of traditional therapy.

As Head Instructor of RKD Karate Williamstown and a member of the RKD Karate Executive, I bring decades of experience in coaching, combatives, and inclusive practice. I’m committed to fostering a strong community grounded in respect, personal development, and the RKD philosophy of Strength, Unity, and Awakening.

Rick Gawel

Nidan, Dai Sempai, Ryu Ku Do Karate

My journey into the world of martial arts began in 1988, when a mate introduced me to Zen Do Kai. Back then, I saw it as a great opportunity for personal development, whether for self-defence, physical fitness, or mental and spiritual growth. Training four days a week was common, and coming home exhausted gave me a strong sense of accomplishment.

After years of consistent training, including kickboxing and boxing, life’s priorities shifted and I had to pause my practice. Fast forward 15 years, and my focus has evolved, now centred on student development and helping others grow, overcome challenges, and achieve their personal goals.

Chloe Wilson

Manager Business Operations, CBChange

With over 20 years in administration, I’ve built my career on creating structure, streamlining processes, and supporting teams to do their best work. I take pride in staying one step ahead - anticipating needs, solving problems early, and maintaining a calm, efficient presence behind the scenes. My focus is always on helping people thrive through clarity, consistency, and support.

I grew up in a martial arts household, with my father teaching Aikido for over 30 years. His passion passed on to me, shaping both my values and perspective. Through my own training, I developed a deep appreciation for balance, inclusion, and the principles that make a dojo feel safe and welcoming, qualities I carry into everything I do.
