RKD Karate Grading for 6th Degree Black Belt and Above

Welcome to the RKD Karate Grading Process for 6th Degree Black Belt and Above. Our grading system is based on an individual's dedication to the art of Karate, as well as their mastery of the techniques, kata, and philosophy of the style. The grading process is designed to recognize the achievements of our students, and to encourage continued growth and development in the practice of RKD Karate.

Grades are awarded by a panel of experienced and knowledgeable instructors, who assess the candidate's abilities, skills, and commitment to the art of Karate. The panel takes into consideration the individual's years of practice, experience, and mastery of the techniques, kata, and philosophy of the style, as well as their commitment to continued education and growth. The panel also considers the impact that the individual's practice of Karate has had on the RKD Karate community and their life more broadly.

The grading process is a rigorous and challenging one, and is designed to ensure that only those who have truly dedicated themselves to the art of Karate and who have achieved a high level of mastery are awarded the rank of 6th Degree Black Belt and above. We encourage all of our students to strive towards this goal, and to continue to develop their skills and dedication to the art of Karate.


Below is a summary of the philosophy for each of the ranks from 6th to 10th degree black belt.

"The Way of the Warrior"

6th Dan - Black Belt

"The Way of the Warrior" (Budo) encompasses the essence of 6th Degree Black Belt in RKD Karate, embodying the skills and principles honed through years of dedicated practice and training. It represents a deep understanding and mastery of karate, as well as a commitment to the warrior spirit and the principles of strength, unity, and awakening. Through this philosophy, 6th Degree Black Belts embody the ideals of the art and serve as true leaders and role models in the RKD Karate community.
"The Power of Presence"

7th Dan - Black Belt

"The Power of Presence" (Mushin) - Embodying the essence of the warrior spirit, the 7th Degree Black Belt embodies the ideal of being fully present and in the moment, free from distraction and mental interference, and attuned to their environment and surroundings. Through the development of their skills, they have honed the ability to embody the power of presence in every moment, becoming a true embodiment of the art of karate.
"The Mind-Body Connection"

8th Dan - Black Belt

The philosophy for 8th Degree Black Belt in RKD Karate is "The Mind-Body Connection" (Ki), reflecting the belief that a harmonious relationship between the mind and body is necessary for true mastery of the martial art. By cultivating this connection, the 8th Degree Black Belt has developed a deep understanding of the flow of energy, balance, and control in their movements and has achieved a level of fluidity and grace in their practice.
"The Essence of Emptiness"

9th Dan - Black Belt

9th Degree Black Belt: "The Essence of Emptiness" (Ku no Sei) represents the understanding and mastery of the concept of emptiness, or "Ku," in karate. This philosophy emphasizes the importance of letting go of ego, attachments, and preconceptions in order to fully embrace the principles and techniques of the art. With a clear and open mind, practitioners at this level can attain a deep connection with their inner selves and truly embody the essence of karate.
 "Beginner's Mind Revisited"

10th Dan - Black Belt

10th Degree Black Belt: "Beginner's Mind Revisited" (Shoshin no Futatabi) - At this level of mastery, the practitioner returns to the openness and innocence of a white belt, but with the added wisdom and experience of a lifetime of practice. By letting go of preconceived notions and continuously seeking new knowledge and growth, the practitioner can continue to evolve in their practice and life.
